Looking at Lists #1: Thyron, Sword of Truth at 35pts and 50pts

Game: Warmachine
Faction: Retribution of Scyrah
Size: 35 & 50pts
Warcaster: Thyron, Sword of Truth

With my faction ADD beginning to intensify, I think 2016 is the year that I will immerse myself in the Angry Elves. I have been eyeing up Retribution of Scyrah for a while, and slowly building a collection based around the Battle Box, a Heavy Jack box, Unit box, and a couple of blisters (one Solo and one UA), and finally the All-in-One box (as for the cost vs value, I didn’t want to miss it before it went out of stock).

While I have had a small handful of games using these models, it has never been much more than a dabble. This will be changing after SmogCon, as I intend to attempt to play RoS as my primary faction for the rest of the year. With this in mind, I have written a couple of lists based around Thyron, who appears to me as the final piece of my gateway into RoS.

I wrote the 35pt list first, attempting to work to Thyron’s strengths, as well as restricting myself to models I own as far as possible.

Starting with Thyron, I added Sylys to help alleviate Focus issues by way of the free upkeep, and the range boost for the first spell cast could come in use if I feel the need to cycle my main upkeep spell. I then added a Phoenix for his Warjack. The sidestep from his Feat seems to be a perfect fit for this ‘Jack, giving him just a little extra threat range when needed, thanks to already having Reach.

To help support the Phoenix, I added 2 Arcanists – the idea being that it gives me a lot more flexibility over just having just one – 2 Repair actions / Repair and Power Booster / Power Booster and Concentrated Power etc. You get the idea.

The max unit of Halberdiers with UA were added as they are currently my only melee unit, but will do nicely as a Spell Piercer target. Adding the Houseguard Thane to support this unit was a no brainer. Choosing the Mage Hunter Strike Force over the Riflemen was down to allowing the Thane to focus entirely on the Halberdiers, and not make me choose which unit needed supporting turn to turn, as well as the fact that the MHSF already have the major selling point of Spell Piercer built in, meaning that I won’t have to move this upkeep around so much. The UA for this unit was also a no brainer – the value of Phantom Seeker is reduced slightly, thanks to Ranked Attacks on the Halberdiers (as they will more often than not be acting as a screen), but this still allows me to shoot through the enemy forces to snipe valuable targets behind their front lines.

Adding Eiryss 1, I was looking at her ability to be a bit of a ranged toolbox, and strip Focus from her targets. While the MHSF won’t care about this, it is the final part of the assassination puzzle for everyone else.

With only 2 points left, I felt that the best option was a Mage Hunter Assassin. She is an Excellent Storm Rager target, and while breaks my “no purchases” restriction, she is very much worth it!

Final 35pt List:

40 / 40 (35+5) Warcaster(s) : 1/1 Warjack(s) : 1 Battle Engines : 0 Solos : 5 Units : 2

Thyron, Sword of Truth – WJ: +5
– Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker
– Phoenix – PC: 10

Arcanist – PC: 1
Arcanist – PC: 1
Houseguard Thane – PC: 2
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios – PC: 3
Mage Hunter Assassin – PC: 2

Houseguard Halberdiers – Leader & 9 Grunts: 7
– Halberdier Officer & Standard – PC: 2
Mage Hunter Strike Force – Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
– Strike Force Commander – Commander 2
Moving on from that list up to 50pts, I dropped the “no purchases” restriction entirely – mainly because I need to get Thyron anyway, but I am also very interested in a couple of other units / models that I will be looking to pick up in relatively short order.

First of all, I added a max unit of Dawn Guard Sentinels. As a fan of Doom Reavers in my Khador and Nihilators in my Skorne, this unit was never going to be far behind! The UA would have been nice for Vengeance, but the Drive would have been a waste as I wasn’t planning to have this unit Jack Marshall anything for now, so ultimatley dropped from the list. I then added a unit of Electromancers – these guys look so much fun! Spell Piercer on them would do quite nicely in a pinch, too!

My final change to the 35pt list to bring it up to 50pts was to upgrade the Phoenix to Imperatus. I don’t think Thyron runs any ‘Jack quite as well as he manages with Imperatus. I have been a fan of this ‘Jack since he was initially unveiled, and the thought of what he could accomplish under Thyron’s Feat is very compelling!

Final 50pt List:

55 / 55 (50+5) Warcaster(s) : 1/1 Warjack(s) : 1 Battle Engines : 0 Solos : 5 Units : 4

Mage Hunter Strike Force – Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
